What is Achilles Tendon Rupture?

The Achilles tendon is at the back of the heel and can be damaged or ruptured by a sudden force of the foot or ankle. A ruptures Achilles ankle will prevent you from standing or tiptoeing.

Symptoms
  • A flat footed type of walk
  • Inability to stand or tiptoe
  • If it is completely torn you will feel a gap at the back of the heel
  • Excruciating pain in the heel
  • Unbearable pain early in the morning in the heel region

Cause
  • The Achilles tendon can rupture with high force or stress and may occur in sports such as football, running basketball and tennis.
  • Falls or injuries and trauma to the foot may also cause the rupture of the Achilles tendon.
  • Sometimes the tendon is weak leaving the person more prone to rupture
Treatment
  • If you suspect a torn Achilles tendon you must seek medical help immediately
  • Surgery is usually performed where a surgeon sews the tendon back into place and a plaster cast applied to speed up recovery (by forcing it to stay in correct position)
  • Supportive 3/4 length insoles will help to take the pressure off the heel
  • Adjustable Night Splints will helps gently stretch the Achilles Tendon

Prevention
  • Prevention of a rupture is not always possible but always doing warm up exercises before starting any sports may help reduce the risk of rupture
