Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal syndrome is where there is excessive pressure on the median nerve that can cause swelling in the carpal tunnel. Although any one can suffer from the condition it is most common in people from 30s onwards and may be associated to activity and stresses subjected to their fingers.
 
Symptoms
  • Numbness and tingling in the hand and fingers
  • Feeling of weakness in the hand
  • Decreased grip strength
  • Atrophy of the muscles in the hand
  • Dryness of the skin
Cause
  • Sometimes triggered by the occupation of the patient it is closely associated to the stresses of the fingers and hand endure
  • Genetic condition or an arthritic condition of the bones.
  • Other factors may be obesity, diabetes, or occasionally a side effect from drugs
  • Manual work or using typing writers or the usage of a mouse
Treatment
  • Using ice packs will help ease pain
  • Massaging the area with rubs, creams and gels can help relive pain
  • The use of a splint will help elevate pain
Prevention
  • Changing the position of the hand and fingers at rest or whilst conducting activity may help prevent issues
  • Exercising the fingers and hand may help keep in strong and prevent problems
