Cellulitis and Erysipelas

What is Cellulitis and Erysipelas?

Cellulitis is an infection of skin in the deep layer of the connective tissues and the layer of fat and tissue just under the skin. Erysipelas is an infection nearer the surface of the skin. Although the infection can occur anywhere on the body the leg is most usual place for it to occur.

Symptoms
  • Affected areas may feel warm and look red and swollen.
  • The affected area is usually tender may also contain blisters.
  • You may feel unwell and have a fever for up to 24 hours before the onset of the infection
  • Excessive accumulation of fluid between cells
Cause
  • Infection is caused by bacteria entering the skin through small cuts or tears. Once under the skin the bacteria multiples and spreads along under the skin surface causing the infection.
  • Athletes foot (the fungal foot infection) is often the underlying cause of the infection where it causes small cuts in the feet and toes where the bacteria can enter and spread up to the calf
Treatment
  • If you suffer from Athletes foot the Imperial Athletes Foot Solution will help clear the infection
  • Apply moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated
  • Other things you may be able to do to help relieve symptoms maybe to raise your leg to help prevent swelling
  • A course of antibiotics will be prescribed by doctors to help you fight the infection.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to remain hydrated preferably water
Prevention
  • Clean and treat wounds and cuts as soon as you can (covering them with plasters to prevent ingress of bacteria)
  • Don't let skin become too dry and prone to cracking Flexitol Heel Balm may help
  • Avoid scratching the skin
