Coccydinia

What is coccydinia?

The coccyx is the tailbone located at the end of the spine below the sacrum. The pain experienced in this region is referred to as Coccydinia. It is more common in women than in men.

Symptoms
  • The first noticeable symptom is usually a dull ache
  • In cases such as fractures after a fall the pain is sudden and constant
  • Sitting can cause the pain to worsen
Cause
  • Difficult childbirth is the most common cause of Coccydinia
  • Trauma to this area (such as falling) is also a known cause
  • In some cases regular physical activity such as cycle could be the reason
Treatment
  • In some cases simple pain may be enough to alleviate pain caused from a minor fall on the tailbone
  • For long term pain a local anesthetic is used to numb the area and a steroid is injected into the area
  • Physiotherapy or osteopathy can help if the cause of the problem is a displaced coccyx
  • The use of a well padded cushion or pillow can be used to alleviate pain when seated
Prevention
  • If the cause of the problem was a difficult childbirth, discussing alternative birthing positions may be possible with your midwife
