Ganglion Cyst

What is Ganglion cyst?

A ganglion cyst is a lump that develops on the tendon sheath or joint lining. They can appear on the underside or back of the wrist and are filled with fluid. They can be hard or soft to the touch and tend to go away on their own. The ganglion occasionally can be painful, especially if they are next to a nerve and they never spread to other parts of the body.
 
Symptoms
  • Lumps around the base of the wrist that may be hard or soft to the touch
  • Swelling may occur
  • Can be very painful 
Cause
  • The exact cause is unknown but it is possible that they may be caused due to injury
Treatment
  • Usually, no treatment is necessary and they go away by themselves
  • Splints can be used on the affected area and surgery can be performed if they become painful
  • In some cases, surgical removal is required 
  • Apply Ointments and balms
Prevention
  • Avoid putting pressure on the wrist
  • Do not lift very heavy items
