Golfer Elbow

What is golfer's elbow?

Golfer's elbow is a form of tendonitis where overuse of the muscles and tendons in the forearm lead to inflammation and pain around the elbow joint. Golfers elbow or Medial Epicondylitis comes from the names of the bony prominences where the tendons insert and inflammation occurs to cause pain.

Symptoms
  • Sharp pain at the end of the upper arm (elbow) that is more prominent when lifting or grasping and object
  • Pain can be felt when attempting to reach for and hold an object or when carrying out an activity such as typing on a keyboard
Cause
  • The injury could be due to a single violent impact or through repeated stress to the area.
  • Where an action is repeated excessively pain can develop and in sports such as golf repeated use of the forearm can cause this problem
Treatment
  • Complete rest for the affected area
  • Physiotherapy and massage to help relax and heal the area
  • Stretching exercises for the epicondyle tendons
  • Support products like compressions and braces
  • Massaging rubs will help ease pain
Prevention
  • Correct warm and cooling down when doing strenuous exercise
  • Strength condition for the affected area (forearm)
