What is Ingrown Toenails?

Ingrown toe nails also known medically as Onychocryptosis is a painful horrible condition and essentially where the nail pierces into the flesh. Ingrown toenails grow into the surrounding skin, as the nail deforms and curls piercing into the skin causing pain and discomfort. The skin becomes red, tender and swollen and is untouchable when pressure is applied.

The big toe is most prone to be effected.
 
Symptoms
  • Symptoms may vary depending on how sever the ingrown toe nail is
  • Inflammation on skin and end of toe nail
  • Toe becomes red, sore and painful
  • Fluid build-up (oedema) in the surrounding area
  • Infection of the toe (can become sever)
  • Skin over growth around the toe
  • Yellow or white cloured pus draining form the surrounding area
  • Pain when wearing shoes or ill-fitted footwear on  

Cause
  • Tight-fitting footwear, socks and tights
  • Incorrectly cut toe nails
  • Nail infections
  • Toe injury
  • Poor foot hygiene and excessive sweating

Treatment
  • If the ingrown toe nail is in its early stages then self care can be done but always get professional advice before carrying out any treatment
  • Practicing good foot hygiene washing more regularly and allow to dry before inserting in to socks or shoes

  • If the ingrown toe nail is severe then chiropodists will surgically remove a section of the nail bed depending how bad it is. Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) is when surgically part of the toe nail is removed and is the most common procedure. The procedure is carried out under local anesthetic which is injected in the base of the toe followed by removal of the affected section and the sides are cut away to for straighter nails.
  • Total Nail Avulsion (TNA) is when the whole nail bed is removed to prevent further and future ingrown toe nails

Prevention
  • Good foot hygiene will prevent any type of foot infections
  • Good adequate footwear which is correctly fitting helps with foot health. To shop for shoes it always recommended to purchase when your feet are hot and are at their largest point
  • Cutting your toenails properly will greatly reduce the chances of ingrown toe nails
