Olecranon Bursitis

What is Olecranon Bursitis Students Elbow?

Olecranon bursitis is the swelling and inflammation of the back of the elbow where the bursa (that makes the lubrication fluid in joints) becomes inflamed and extra fluid is made.
 
Symptoms
  • Thickness or swelling to the elbow
  • The development of a ball like a cyst on the elbow
  • Normally there is no pain unless you develop an infection within the bursa
Cause
  • Mild repeated injury (such as constantly leaning on elbows) is the most common cause
  • A one of off injury to affected area may set off the inflammation
  • Arthritis may be a factor
  • Infection of the bursa
Treatment
  • Where there is pain or inflammation the use of soothing balms, creams and gels can be used to relieve pain
  • Elbow supports
  • Elbow Padding
  • wearing elbow supports to provide compression
Prevention
Be aware of constantly resting on or leaning on elbows and take care not to injure the elbows
