What is Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

Osgood-Schlater disease is a painful condition that affects the upper part of the shin bone. It usually is found in teenagers who play sports and can cause pain and swelling just below the knee.
 
Symptoms
  • The main symptom is pain just under the kneecap usually worse after activity
  • The pain usually only lasts a few months but in some cases can continue until you have finished growing which may be some years
  • A small tender lump may develop below the kneecap which is permanent but becomes painless in time
Cause
  • Usually the overuse of the quadriceps muscles is thought to be the common cause
  • Sometimes it develops for no reason
Treatment
  • Pain usually goes away after a few months without any treatment however pain killers can be used if the pain flares up
  • Supports can be worn to retain heat and provide compression
