Patellofemoral Pain

What is Patellofemoral Pain?

Patellofemoral pain is the medical term given to pain that occurs at the front of the knee around the kneecap and occurs without signs of damage or other problems to the joint.
  • Pain around the knee area which comes and goes and may be felt more after exercise or after sitting for long periods
  • Grating or grinding feeling or noise from the knee
  • Swelling around the area
  • Redness around the region
  • Overuse of the knee
  • Misalignment of the knee (naturally occurring or due to injury)
  • Foot problems such as weak arches affects the way the knee works and cause pain
  • Injury to the knee area
  • Reduced muscle strength in the knee area
  • Wearing insoles in your shoes provide support to the arch which will help ease pain and correct the alignment of the knee
  • Avoid strenuous use of the knee
  • Painkillers can be used to help with the pain
  • Physiotherapy may be required to improve the strength of the knee
  • Using suitable footwear to prevent strain on the knee
  • Special knee braces can also help reduce pain by restricting movement
