What is Scaphoid Wrist Fracture?

The scaphoid is a small bone in the wrist that is prone to fracture from falls or injuries. Because it has its own blood supply damage to this area can disrupt the flow of blood preventing or slowing down the healing process.

  • Pain and tenderness to the wrist area
  • Swelling around the wrist
  • Bruising around the wrist area
  • Falls or trauma to the area
  • Direct blow to the palms of your hands can cause a fracture
  • Activities such as gymnasts can lead to repeated stress on scaphoid bone, therefore, can cause fracture
  • A cast is worn for 8 to 12 weeks
  • Surgery to fix the bone in place (or possible debridement and bone grafting)
