Shin Splints

What is Shin Splints?

Shin splints (sometimes called tibial stress syndrome) is the name given to the pain felt along the front of the leg area (shin) and is usually exercise related. It is a common condition in runners and it may worsen if you continue with exercise.
 
Symptoms
  • Pain along the shin area and usually felt just after exercises such as running.
  • Pain in the front and sides of the lower leg
  • Tenderness ans swelling in the area
  • Burning sensation
  • Muscle torn
Cause
  • The exact causes are not known but it is thought to be related to overuse of the area. Some things can make shin splints more likely and these include
  • Increase in exercise or training
  • Lack of calcium
  • Hard running surface
  • Inadequate footwear
Treatment
  • Resting the affected area is the best form of treatment
  • Ice packs can be applied topically to help relieve pain
  • Elevating the leg will help reduce swelling
  • Painkillers can be used to control pain
  • Calf supports
Prevention
  • There is no single preventative measure for shin splits exists but a number of steps can be taken to help reduce your chances of suffering from it.
  • The correct shoes and proper insoles designed for your feet will help prevent injury as well as graduating running programs to stop you going straight to intense running can be helpful.
  • Stretch well before any kind of exercise such as running
