Shoulder Dislocation

What is Shoulder Dislocation?

A shoulder dislocation is where the top arm bone (humerus) losses contact with the socket of the shoulder blade (scapula). There are three bones in the shoulder joint the humerus (arm bone) the scapula (shoulder blade) and clavicle (Collarbone). In a shoulder dislocation an injury occurs to the joint between the humerous and scapula. This is different from a separation which is when the injury is between the scapula and the clavicle.

 
Symptoms
  • Shoulder pain that can become very intense
  • When the arm is held to the side it usually rests slightly away from the body and turned outwards
  • Loss of the normal rounded contour of the deltoid muscle (corner of the shoulder)
Cause
  • The most usual cause is sports injury or other similar types of sudden impacts or injurie
Treatment
  • Reduction (repositioning) of the shoulder bones is done after full and through examination is carried out to ensure no other damage has occurred
  • Shoulder supports will help in supporting the dislocated shoulder with warmth, compression and support
  • Hot and Cold therapy will help ease pain
Prevention
  • Due care and protective layers are required when carrying out sports or physical activities that may leave the patient prone to this type of injur
