Slipped Disc

What is Slipped Disc (Prolapsed Disc)?

A slipped disc is when part of the inner softer part of the disc bulges out (herniates) through a weakness in the outer part of the disc (also known as herniated disc). The bulging disc may press on surrounding structures and tissues.

Symptoms
  • Back pain that comes on suddenly (usually eased by lying flat)
  • Nerve root pain (sciatica)
  • Some people do not have any noticeable symptoms
Cause
  • The exact causes are not known but it is believed that some people may have a weakness in the outer part of the affected disc leaving them more prone to herniated discs.
  • Different triggers may be the cause of a prolapsed disc and include sneezing, awkward bending, heavy lifting and weight bearing sports.
Treatment
  • Carry on as normal and remain active whilst not doing anything that causes too much pain.
  • Staying active will speed up recovery
  • Applying massaging creams, rubs and balms will help elevate pain
  • hot bath soaks can help with pain management
  • In some cases your doctor may require you to undergo surgery for treatment but this is only for the minority of cases
Prevention
  • Keeping active and regularly taking exercise will help prevent slipped discs occurring.
  • Also observing good posture when lifting or bending will help.
