What is Torticollis?

Torticollis means twisted neck and is when the neck becomes twisted to one side (sometimes referred to as wry neck)
  • The condition usually involves pain on one side of the neck and stiffness of muscles in that area.
  • It is common for people to go bed feeling fine but waking up with the pain.
  • Movement of the neck is sometimes restricted on one side
  • Cervical dystonia or spasmodic torticollis is where there is abnormal movement in the muscles of the neck. It often occurs in people over the age of 40 and prevents control of the contractions of the neck muscles.
  • Other causes may be infection, injury to area, tumors, or side effects of medication
  • Neck rolls may help while you sleep to prevent further pain
  • Wearing neck collars to hold the neck in a natural position can help ease pain
  • Usually the pain will subside after 24 to 48 hours.
